Specialist installers

Specialist domestic EV charger installation across Greater Manchester.

We install home EV chargers properly — to current BS 7671 standards, with the right protection, on supplies that can handle them, and routed cleanly through whatever the building throws at us.

Every install is quoted after an onsite survey. The electrician who quotes is the electrician who fits. Standard domestic installs start from £250 for the installation itself; the final figure depends on the supply, the cable run, and whether your consumer unit needs upgrading. We tell you exactly which one you’ve got after the survey.

If you’ve already got a charger — bought new, supplied with the car, or carried over from a previous home — we’ll fit it. If you haven’t, we’ll help you pick one based on your car, your tariff, and the way you actually use the vehicle.

What an installation actually covers

What we do, top to bottom.

A standard domestic EV charger installation covers everything from the consumer unit to the charger on the wall, plus all the protection, isolation and notification that makes it compliant.

Onsite survey
Supply check, route planning, consumer unit assessment, written quote.
Cable run
Clipped, in containment (trunking or conduit), or buried in SWA depending on route.
Isolation
Additional isolator at the supply head where the run is too long for the charger’s onboard isolation.
Protection
RCBO or appropriate Type A/B protection in the consumer unit, surge protection where required.
Charger mounting
Wall, post, or pedestal as the survey dictates.
Termination & commissioning
Final connections, charger configured, tested live.
DNO notification
Submitted to your local network operator (Electricity North West for most of Greater Manchester) where the install requires it.
Certification
Electrical Installation Certificate issued and emailed.
Handover
App walkthrough, tariff setup if smart, fault-finding basics.

Pricing

Three pricing tiers, depending on the job.

Every install gets a fixed written quote after the onsite survey. The pricing below is indicative — most domestic installs land in one of these three tiers. The £250 starting figure covers the installation only; the charger unit itself is separate, whether you supply your own or we source it.

Tier 1

Standard install

From £250

Installation only

Typical scenario

Consumer unit on the inside of the same wall as the charger location. Cable run under 5m, surface-clipped or short containment. No fuse box upgrade.

Includes

  • Cable run up to 5m
  • RCBO protection added to existing consumer unit
  • Charger mounted, terminated, commissioned
  • DNO notification, EIC, handover

Common in newer-build homes, garages with consumer unit on the back wall, integral garages.

Tier 2 · most common

Mid-complexity install

£400–£650

Priced after survey · installation only

Typical scenario

Cable run of 5–20m. Some containment work — trunking, loft routing, short SWA section. Consumer unit may need minor upgrade work.

Includes

  • Cable run up to 20m
  • Containment (trunking, conduit, short SWA)
  • Minor consumer unit upgrade if needed
  • All standard protection, commissioning & certification

Common in terraced homes (CU front, charger rear), semis with detached garages, side-passage routes.

Tier 3

Complex install

£700+

Priced after survey · installation only

Typical scenario

Long underground SWA runs to a separate driveway/garage. Full consumer unit replacement. Henley block work, isolators, supply upgrades. Three-phase or multi-charger.

Includes

  • SWA cable, ducting and burial work
  • Full or partial consumer unit replacement
  • Henley block, additional isolators, meter tail upgrades
  • Three-phase work if applicable
  • Full DNO notification & certification

Common in larger detached homes, listed buildings/older properties needing electrical upgrades, EV-ready prep for second cars.

The charger unit itself is separate from these figures. If you’re supplying the charger — including units provided free with a new car — that’s reflected in your quote. If you’d like us to source one, we’ll quote both options so you can compare.

Compatible with most major brands

Whatever charger you've got — or want.

We’re not tied to any one manufacturer. That means our recommendations are about what fits your home, car and tariff — not what we get commission on. We install most major UK-market home chargers, including units supplied free with new electric vehicles.

Choosing your charger

Tethered or untethered? Here's the short version.

Tethered

A charger with the cable permanently attached.

Pros

Faster to use day-to-day — no cable to fetch, no faff. Always there, always the right length for your driveway.

Cons

You’re locked into one connector type. If you change cars and the new one has a different port, you’re either replacing the charger or carrying an adapter. Cable usually 5m — fine for most driveways but tight if the car parks awkwardly.

Best for

Single-car households, set parking position, drivers who want speed and convenience over flexibility.

Untethered

A charger with a socket — you supply your own cable.

Pros

Works with any car, any port type, any cable length. Tidier on the wall when not in use. Future-proof if you change cars or have multiple EVs.

Cons

Extra step every time — fetch cable, plug in both ends, put it away after. Cables aren’t cheap if you need a replacement.

Best for

Multi-car households, drivers who change vehicles often, anyone who values flexibility over convenience.

There’s no wrong answer — it’s a lifestyle question more than a technical one. We’ll talk it through during the survey.

Where the charger goes

Most homes can take a charger. Some take more thought than others.

The single biggest variable in any quote is the cable route. Here’s what a typical install looks like for the four most common home setups.

SCENARIO 01

Charger on the same wall as the consumer unit

The simplest case. Consumer unit on the inside of the garage or external wall, charger going on the outside of the same wall, short run through. Often a Tier 1 install. Most newer-build homes.

SCENARIO 02

Charger on a different wall

Cable runs along the loft, through a soffit, or surface-clipped along an external wall. Containment matters — we use trunking that matches the building’s exterior or runs cable through unobtrusive routes wherever we can. Often Tier 2.

SCENARIO 03

Charger on a detached garage or outbuilding

Underground SWA cable run, ducted, buried to depth, with appropriate isolation at both ends. Driveway may need partial dig-up depending on the route. Almost always Tier 3.

SCENARIO 04

No driveway, on-street parking

The trickiest case. Sometimes possible via a through-pavement gulley (council permit required), a charger mounted on the front of the house with a coiled cable, or a side-passage route. Book a survey and we’ll tell you straight.

FAQs

Installation questions, answered.

No. The £250 covers the installation work itself — survey, cable run, protection, commissioning, certification and DNO notification. The charger unit is separate. If you’re supplying your own (including units provided free with a new car), that’s reflected in your quote. If you’d like us to source the charger, we’ll quote both options so you can compare.

Standard single-phase 7.4kW domestic charger installs use 6mm² cable for runs up to roughly 20 metres, with appropriate uprating for longer runs. SWA — steel wire armoured — is used for any underground or external runs to detached buildings. We size the cable per BS 7671’s adiabatic and voltage-drop requirements every time, with current capacity to spare.

Yes — and we wouldn’t install a charger without it. The Distribution Network Operator (Electricity North West for most of Greater Manchester) needs to know any time a load over 16A is added to a domestic supply. We complete and submit the notification on your behalf as part of every install. Some installers skip this; it’s not optional.

Sometimes. 22kW chargers need a three-phase supply, which most UK domestic properties don’t have — single-phase is standard. If you do have three-phase, yes, we’ll install one. If you’re considering paying to upgrade to three-phase: it’s expensive, often disruptive, and rarely worth it for charging speed alone. A 7kW charger overnight gives most cars a full charge from empty by morning. We’ll talk it through honestly during the survey.

No. A properly installed EV charger sits on its own dedicated circuit with its own protection, separate from everything else. Your existing sockets, lights, cooker and shower carry on as normal. The only time other circuits are touched is if your consumer unit needs upgrading to bring it up to current standards — we tell you that at survey, not on the day.

Less than most people expect. A standard install is one electrician onsite for a day, working mostly outside or in the garage. Power to the rest of the house is briefly off when we tie into the consumer unit — usually 30–60 minutes total, planned around your day. We sweep up, take all packaging away, and leave things tidy.

Usually no. Owner-occupiers don’t need permission to fit an EV charger to their own home. Listed buildings, conservation areas and rented properties are different — we cover those during the survey. Through-pavement gullies for on-street parking need council approval, which we can advise on. DNO notification is our job, not yours.

Several options. We can remove the charger and reinstall it at the new property (see our Chargepoint Relocation page). You can leave it for the next owner — many buyers see it as a positive. Or, if the new owner doesn’t want it, we’ll come and remove it cleanly. The charger is yours; the install is yours; the choice is yours.
